Welcome to my web site, dedicated to saltwater fly fishing, information about saltwater gamefish, marine conservation, and some of my work as a marine fish ecologist.
In these pages I share some of my thoughts and experiences from fly fishing in saltwater, and try to give you an idea of how my research as a marine fish biologist influences my approach to saltwater fly fishing. Research and fishing have become so intertwined that I automatically approach fishing with a critical eye that comes from years of research, and some of my research has been influenced by my experiences fishing. To paraphrase James Bond (007) – ‘a marine biologist on the water is never on holiday.’
The more we understand about the habitats that gamefish live in, the better anglers we can become. Knowing something about a fish’s life cycle and behavior patterns, for example, will give you a better idea of when and where you’re most likely to find fish. After all, on any given day, 80% or more of the water doesn’t hold any gamefish. The challenge is to figure out which is the fishiest 20%, and that's what the Fisherman's Coast approach is all about.
But the web site is not all nuts and bolts. I’ll also post photographs – some fishy, some not – writing, links to conservation organizations and cool fishing sites, and other things fly fishing.
So please browse the site, let me know what you think, and come back to visit – the site is deep with information, and will become moreso with time. Hopefully, eeach time you browse you’ll find something new.
