Saltwater Flies

In the past I've done some commercial tying for fly shops as well as custom orders for individuals. As my job took more and more time, the use of my extra time came down to a choice between commercial fly tying vs fishing. I chose fishing. The custom order side of things died along with the commercial tying. Since the publication of my book Fly Fisherman's Guide to Saltwater Prey in 2008, I've received inquires from anglers for flies. So I'm going to experiment with adding this page where some flies will be for sale. To the few shops that have inquired - I am NOT getting back into commerical tying that requires tying for bulk orders. Sorry. This page will only list a handful of patterns that I'll tie and sell based on individual angler orders.

What you won't find for sale here - fly patterns that are typically available in fly shops and online catalogs; wholesale prices (it's not worth it for me to tie non-bulk quantities at wholesale prices). What you will find for sale here - quality patterns that I tie (regardless of whether I or someone else is the originator) and use myself. When used in the right habitats, these flies work. If you don't see the pattern you are searching for, check back later. Fly patterns will be added.

Mangrove Muddler(brown or olive)

Best habitats for use: mangrove shorelines, mangrove creeks, salt marshes
Fish I've caught with this pattern: Snook, Redfish, Spotted Seatrout, Striped Bass
Fishing tips: attach to the tippet with a loop knot; short, quick strips, pause between strips to allow the fly to wobble; most strikes will come during the pause between strips
Price: $4.00 each

Bastard Crab

Best Habitats for use: Sand flats, seagrass flats
Fish I've caught with this pattern: Bonefish, Redfish, Tripletail
Fishing tips: the legs and marabou provide all the movement needed; cast the fly so that the fish sees it dropping, or cast in front of a fish and allow the fly to rest on the bottom.
Price: $5.00 each

Big Ugly

Best habitats for use: Sand flats, seagrass flats
Fish I've caught with this pattern: Bonefish, Redfish
Fishing tips: this pattern imitates a mantis shrimp or maybe even a goby. It should be fished with short strips so that it hops acrcoss the bottom or swims eratically near the bottom
Price: $4.00 each

Merkwan (aka legless merkin)

legless merkin

Best habitats for use: Sand flats, seagrass flats
Fish I've caught with this pattern: Bonefish, Redfish, Tripletail, Snook, Striped Bass
Fishing tips: I think this pattern provides a good impression of a fleeing swimming crab, and seems to work best when the fly is moved - whether retrieved fast or slow depends on the mood of the fish on that day.
Price: $5.00 each
