Fishing Strategy: I did well with this pattern in three scenarios. For blind casting, usually in the surf or off the edge of a flat, I either fished with a sinking line or a long leader, let the fly drop to the bottom, and slowly drag the fly across the bottom. In the surf, the key was to keep just enough tension on the line to feel a take, but let the current move the fly. For sight fishing, I would use one of two strategies, depending on the behavior of the stripers. If the stripers were spooky, I'd cast well ahead of a spotted fish, let the fly remain still on the bottom, and then bump the fly as the striper came within range. My favorite, though, was to cast the fly at a cruising fish so the fish would see the fly drop to the bottom. This typically resulted in energetic takes. |
