Lefty's Deceiver

Cape Deceiver

Materials:
Hook - Mustad 34007, size 1/0 (shown), 2/0 and 3/0
Thread - Flat waxed nylon, white
Tail - White bucktail and white saddle hackle
Flash - Silver flashabou under bucktail, pearl flashabou outside bucktail, and dark flashabou to match colored bucktail on back.
Throat and sides - White bucktail
Wing - White bucktail under colored bucktail - can also substitute various colors for the white bucktail on the wing.
Eyes - Reflective adhesive eyes

Comments: Deceivers can be tied to have high body profiles (pictured above) to imitate baitfish like menhaden or narrow body profiles so imitate sandeels. In either case, I think they perform best when tied sparsely. On Cape Cod, the major high-profile baitfish is the menhaden, which explains the purple/blue back on the fly. I used this fly mostly in the late summer and fall when stripers were feeding on large schools of juvenile menhaden.
